New Fairfield, Connecticut

New Fairfield and Candlewood Lake Living

New Fairfield, Connecticut, is a somewhat small gem of a lake town located in Fairfield County. Spanning 25.1 miles and with a population of 14,000, New Fairfield is just 50 miles from New York City. Bordering the towns of Westport, Trumbull, Easton and Bridgeport, New Fairfield is part of what is referred to as The Gold Coast of Connecticut.

The five towns in The Gold Coast all sit along the edge of beautiful Candlewood Lake, which is the largest lake in the state  providing residents with approximately 60 miles of shoreline. While Squantz Pond, Ball Pond and Margerie Reservoir can also be found in New Fairfield, Candlewood Lake is dominant on the Eastern side of the area. In fact, this bedroom community is clearly defined by Candlewood Lake. The Lake continues to flow both North and South, extending beyond the town borders.

Close to the City

Sitting at the southwestern tip of Connecticut, easily accessible from 1-84, New Fairfield also straddles the border of New York State. This area offers a true vacation lifestyle with the convenience of New York City nearby.

Originally created when the Housatonic and the Rocky Rivers flooded the valley, Candlewood Lake is now a draw for divers, fishermen, kayakers and other water sports enthusiasts. Many homes in the area boast waterfront views and luxurious privacy; from individual lakefront properties to lakefront communities.

There are several Candlewood Lake neighborhoods that offer direct waterfront living as well as off-water homes. Amenities range from private beaches and tennis courts to clubhouses, boat docks, and summer camps. The communities are social and residents often travel by golf carts to meet up with friends and family,

Charming vintage properties can also be found throughout this classic Connecticut countryside. With a wide variety of homes, styles and pricing, New Fairfield is an exceptionally appealing place to settle down. There is a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes here, which reflects an overall stability in the community.

Classic New England Community Values

With the lowest crime rate in the county, New Fairfield is also a fabulous choice for those interested in finding a community where they can raise a family. Safety is paramount and academic values abound here; from the good public-school district to the large population of college – educated adults. In fact, New Fairfield is one of the most well-educated cities the US.

When residents are not at Candlewood Lake they can be found in downtown New Fairfield enjoying a local restaurant, at the dog park, or taking part in the array of activities available at Squatz Pond Park. This 170-acre park sits adjacent to Pootatuck State Forest and offers visitors options for boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving and hiking.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy the two family-friendly beaches at New Fairfield Town Park. South Beach has both shaded and sunny areas in addition to a playground and a gradual entry into the lake from the beach. North Beach offers full sun exposure and steps which lead into shallow water. For those looking for a true ocean adventure Long Island Sound is a just an hour away by car.

As is indicative of the rest of New England, this is a close knit, family-oriented community; charming and quaint, ripe with tradition and local color. If you are in search of a small, quiet community with an abundance of outdoor activities to choose from then New Fairfield should be at the top of your list!
